Christmas is now behind us and the next couple of months will bring frosty mornings and grey skies.  But that is no reason to pull down the hatches and hibernate until the clocks change again. 1. Phoenix Park

The Phoenix Park is the largest urban park in Europe. It’s also great for young families and free to visit. It’s home to Dublin Zoo, Áras an Uachtaráin, the old Guinness family home, Farmleigh, the visitor centre, picnic spots and plenty of playgrounds. On top of that it is also home to a huge amount of wildlife, including a large herd of deer who have been in residence in the park since the 17th century.

2. Fun and Adventures for all the family at Castlecomer Discovery Park, Kilkenny

Set in the former grounds of the Wandesforde Estate, Castlecomer Discovery Park comprises 80 acres of stunning natural woodland and lakes. Opened to the public in 2007 with the launch of the Coal Mining Exhibition, Visitor Centre and Design Craft studios which are located in the former stable yard. The Park continues to evolve and is actively developing a range of exciting recreational, cultural and educational activities for visitors of all ages.

3. People’s Park Co Co Market

The People’s Park Co Co Market is located on the edge of Dún Laoghaire town in the historic People’s Park. The Park has been open since 1890 and features great examples of Victorian architecture including the Tea Rooms and a bandstand with original gaslight standards. The market is one of the most popular events, attracting large crowds every weekend. Over 50 market stalls trade each Sunday selling a wide range of products from hot food, baked goods nand art to artisan food and seasonal produce

4. Johnstown Castle, Wexford

Johnstown Castle is an ideal day trip if you are in the Wexford region. There are spectacular ornamental grounds and gardens surrounding the 19th century castle. The landscape is enhanced by two lakes with folly towers, populated with a range of waterfowl.There are also pleasant pathways which meander through the pleasure grounds, attracting visitors to wander at will.

5. Walls of Derry

A walk around the walls in Derry reveals a splendid city crammed full of history, heritage and culture. The Walls, which are approxi 1.5km in circumference, form a walkway around the inner city providing a unique promenade to view the layout of the original town which still preserves its Renaissance Style street plan. The Walls are the most complete city walls in Ireland and one of the finest examples in Europe. T
